History:
When they were kids, his parents divorced and his sister went to live with their mother and he went to to his father, who was a drunk and gambled a lot, leaving the two in poverty. Because of the low income life, Joey joined a gang with a boy named Tristan and caused trouble, like to a boy name Yugi who always played with toys and games.
One day when a abusive hallway monitor beat them up 'for Yugi', but Yugi defended stating he never wanted Tristan or Joey to be hurt. This didn't suit well with the man as he was forcing Yugi to pay for the work he did.
Seeing how Yugi was a good guy, he went into the pool to give the boy his last piece of the puzzle. There, the spirit of the Pharoh was brought out, and he played a shadow game with the bully, trapping his mind thinking leaves are money.
Since then, Joey and Tristan have been good friends with Yugi, sticking by him and Tea. By the time Pegasus set up a tournament on Duelist Island, Yugi had motives to go there to save his grandfather's soul, while Joey found out his sister is having an operation to cure her blindness and needed money. Aiming for the prize money, Yugi gave Joey one of his star chips so he could join the tournament. There, he met Mai Valentine, and other players, even winning Red-Eyes Black Dragon from a elite duelist named Rex.
In the finals, Joey had to face Yugi, and while he fought a strong match, he lost, but he did got the prize money from his friend.
After he paid for his sister's operation, he tried to rush to the hospital, but was sidetracked by a gang called the rare hunters, wanting his Red-Eyes. In the morning, he managed to get his sister's trust again, and he and Yugi entered Kaiba's Battle City, where the Rare Hunters are in. Yugi won Joey's Red-Eyes, and it came useful when Joey was mind controlled by the Rare Hunter's leader, Marik and it broke him free from a spell. Drowning in water, it was his sister who saved him when she took off her blindfold for the first time since the operation.
He made it to the finals, dueling against Marik's dark side for revenge for what he did to Mai. Sadly, he lost conscious before he could make a final strike, but he woken up in time to watch Yugi's victory
Sadly the friendship came to An end in a distant and many of his friends died. Grief got to Joey, and he couldn't bare it, and ditched his old life, and calling himself Jesse Wheeler. Before he left when Domino and Satellite reunited, he trained three young children, Yusei, Jack and Crow, kids who reminded of Yugi, Kaiba and even himself respectively. Training those three in dueling, he felt it was time for him to leave.
