History:
Coming from a wealthy family, Rafael's life took a sudden turn for the worse when a luxury cruise his family attended ended in disaster; a tidal wave destroying the ship they were all on, which killed his family and left him the only survivor. Here, the only company he had were his Guardian cards, and even as his own condition worsened, he did all he could to keep the cards out of harm's way, even as they became weathered with time, and he grew less hopeful of a means to escape.
Once, he thought he saw an island off the coast, which led him to make a raft to sail towards it; however, a tidal wave sent him plunging underwater, where a mysterious voice told him that they would soon meet again. After that, he was rescued by a fishing boat, and brought back to civilization, where he encountered a mysterious man called Dartz. Dartz showed Rafael the grave of his family, and hammered the point home that he was indeed all alone when he dug up the skulls of his siblings. From here, Rafael was swayed by a Dark Guardian, Dreadscythe, and Dartz gave him the Seal of Orichalcos.
As the Doma organization began their work, Rafael was the very strongest of Dartz's swordmen, even topping Valon and Allister. Rafael was responsible for defeating Mai Valentine and swaying her under Dartz's control, and even managed to defeat Yami Yugi under fair circumstances; though Yugi allowed his soul to be taken instead of Yami. Rafael later realized this, and challenged a redeemed Yami once more; though this time, Rafael was the one who was defeated, not by Yami, but by himself, as he sacrificed his life points to resurrect the Guardians he had sent to the Graveyard during the duel.
However, unlike the other swordmen, the Seal of Orichalcos couldn't absorb Rafael's soul, as his defeat was one where negative emotions played no part. This allowed Rafael to save Mai and Valon from the collapsing building, before he confronted Dartz. Here, he learned the truth; Dartz had been the one responsible for the death of his family in the first place. Enraged and shocked that Dartz had deceived him for so long, he tried using the Seal of Orichalcos against him, but sadly, Rafael's strength failed him, and he was taken.
After the defeat of Dartz, Rafael, along with those whose souls had been taken by the Seal, was revived. After that, he's resorted to traveling to find a new path to take in his life. He still carries the Guardian cards with him, but he's vowed to not duel with them anymore; their condition rendering it risky for him to playing them without them being destroyed. Having acquired protective sleeves for his old deck to keep them safe from harm, he's now in search of a new one...
