Armor cards aren't very powerful on their own, for one. As a character himself, Valon is quick to anger, and is incredibly impulsive. He's very attracted to Mai, and would do anything for her. He also tends to have a bit of a bad side toward Joey, as he is his rival.
Personality:
Valon is a very competitive young man with a passion for fights (be they cards or fists), he enjoys facing strong opponents no matter what. He doesn't seem to care what side he's on too, but he's generally a good guy, just misguided and gullible at times. He has a major thing for Mai Valentine, who has a similar dark past as he does. At one point, he hated Joey Wheeler for his feelings toward Mai. But after an amazing duel between the two, his feelings were split between hatred and a deep respect for the man.

History:
Valon grew up in an orphanage and church, and constantly got into fights with the other kids. The nuns tried to show him that it's not all about fisticuffs, but sadly the church burned down. Valon went out for revenge and spotted some thugs talking about the ruined church, and he attacked them thinking they did it. This landed him in a detention center, where the warden had him meet Dartz, the leader of a secret cult. He put Valon through a series of duels on an island to test out his potential. The test was a success, as he used the Seal of Oricalchos very well. Years later, he, Raphiel and Alister worked together to gather souls for Dartz, and he met Mai one day and managed to convince her to join them. Along their mission, he met Joey Wheeler, who dueled Mai several times, trying to save her. This made him cross, and he eventually challenged him to a duel and lost. Seeing Joey as a worthy opponent pleased him as he passed on...but when Yugi defeated Dartz, he and the others were freed. After that, Valon went on a trip to discover what to do next. He still has feelings for Mai, but decided to bury them in order to focus on finding himself...
